CUT/PASTE
Programming with Purpose
Now in its seventeenth season, Resonance Ensemble is a professional vocal ensemble based in Portland, Oregon, known for crafting powerful programs that promote meaningful social change. Through thoughtful, thematic concerts, Resonance amplifies voices historically excluded from the stage—highlighting underrepresented composers, poets, visual artists, and community collaborators.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Dr. Katherine FitzGibbon, Resonance Ensemble engages in bold collaborations with artistic and community partners. Its singers, described by Willamette Week as “one of the Northwest’s finest choirs,” bring technical excellence and emotional depth to repertoire that spans genres and generations.
Resonance commissions and champions new works that reflect diverse lived experiences, giving space to contemporary composers and poets whose perspectives are often overlooked. Collaborations have included poets, jazz musicians, singer-songwriters, dancers, painters, and playwrights—bringing music into rich dialogue with other creative disciplines.
Resonance has commissioned works by artists including A. Mimi Sei, Darrell Grant, Jasmine Barnes, Kenji Bunch, Cecille Elliott, Melissa Dunphy, Damien Geter, S. Renee Mitchell, Joe Kye, Judy A. Rose, Ringdown, Caroline Shaw, Danni Lee Parpan, and many others.
Each concert includes opportunities for the audience to engage directly with community organizations whose missions align with the performance themes. Resonance’s work has been recognized by both local and national media. Oregon ArtsWatch called it “part social commentary, part group therapy, and part best damn choir show in town.” In 2019, Chorus America awarded FitzGibbon the Louis Botto Award for Innovative Action and Entrepreneurial Zeal for her visionary leadership and impact.
