CUT/PASTE
Programming with Purpose
Now in its eighteenth season, Resonance Ensemble is a professional vocal ensemble based in Portland, Oregon, creating powerful choral experiences that spark meaningful social change. Through thoughtfully crafted, thematic concerts, Resonance brings music into conversation with the issues shaping our lives, amplifying voices and perspectives historically excluded from the stage.
Under the artistic leadership of founder and Artistic Director Dr. Katherine FitzGibbon, Resonance commissions and champions new works by contemporary composers and poets, bringing together artists across disciplines and traditions. Its collaborations have included jazz musicians, singer-songwriters, visual artists, dancers, and playwrights, creating performances that connect music with stories, histories, and lived experiences.
Resonance has commissioned works by artists including A. Mimi Sei, Darrell Grant, Jasmine Barnes, Kenji Bunch, Cecille Elliott, Melissa Dunphy, Damien Geter, S. Renee Mitchell, Joe Kye, Judy A. Rose, and many others. Its 2026 release of Safe Harbor, the ensemble’s second album, brings together 12 commissioned works exploring sanctuary, grief, resilience, and hope.
Each concert connects the musical experience with opportunities for audiences to engage with community organizations whose work relates to the program’s themes. Season 18, SHIFT, invites listeners to reconsider familiar perspectives and deepen their connection to one another and the natural world through programs exploring migration, environmental interdependence, historical memory, and belonging.
Resonance’s work has earned recognition from local and national arts communities. Oregon ArtsWatch described its concerts as “part social commentary, part group therapy, and part best damn choir show in town.” In 2019, Chorus America honored FitzGibbon with the Louis Botto Award for Innovative Action and Entrepreneurial Zeal, recognizing her visionary leadership and commitment to meaningful social change through choral music.
