ABOUT THE CONCERT

We explore histories that can’t be reduced to a single story.

Resonance Ensemble and Orchestra Nova Northwest, joined by Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland and guest soloists, present Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem—a sweeping work exploring power, survival, and the many ways history can be understood through the figure of Malinche, an Indigenous interpreter during the Spanish conquest of Mexico.

Frank’s work resists a simple retelling of history. Instead, Conquest Requiem gives voice to a complicated past shaped by culture, power, identity, violence, and survival.

The concert also features the world premiere of a new work by Portland-based Venezuelan composer Giancarlo Castro D’Addona, honoring Portland peace activist Del Greenfield and her lifelong commitment to justice.

Together, these works invite us to listen across perspectives—and to ask what happens when we make room for more than one version of the story.
