Portland-based violinist-looper, vocalist, and artivist Joe Kye “discharges world[s] of emotion” and delivers “divine messages” with his lush string loops and eclectic style (Guitar World). From viral TikTok jingles skewering microaggressions to delivering keynote speeches about creativity, community, and identity, Joe’s music taps into an inner core, inspiring audiences to compassion and empathy.

Drawing upon his immigrant upbringing, Joe blends indie-rock, jazz, rap, and world pop to create a unique sound that grooves, uplifts, and empowers, “leaving everyone in awe” (SN&R). With his innovative use of digital effects and looping, Joe weaves together electronic and acoustic textures, catchy melodies, and a rich, “song-bird sweet voice” (PopMatters). A powerful storyteller, Joe’s performances weave in his immigrant narrative, inspiring audiences towards an “American dream as it should be, [with] Kye reaching across the divide with music to try and heal it - for everyone” (PopMatters). Audiences will “learn about life as an Asian-American” (New York Times) and "believe anew that something glorious awaits the lovers, the dreamers and you." (Willamette Week).

His band, Joe Kye & the Givers, features some of Portland’s most acclaimed musicians, supercharging Joe’s music with intensity and power.

Joe’s children’s music project Hi Joe Kye! introduces families to his story of hope and joy with a more electro-pop sound, embracing the creative power of looping with impromptu songs inspired by audience participation.

He’s an Oregon Arts Commission 2023 Fellow.
