Giancarlo Castro D’Addona
Giancarlo Castro D’Addona is an award-winning Venezuelan composer, conductor, and trumpet player whose work spans orchestral, chamber, jazz, film, and contemporary music. A distinguished graduate of Venezuela’s renowned El Sistema program, he has performed in more than 30 countries and collaborated with leading international arts organizations and ensembles.
His compositions draw on Latin American traditions, jazz, electronic music, and film scoring. His signature work, Grand Fanfare, has been performed at Carnegie Hall, the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Berlin Konzerthaus, and appears on recordings by major international labels.
As a composer and conductor, Castro has worked with ensembles across the Americas and Europe, including the Simón Bolívar Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New World Symphony, and Oregon Symphony. His works have been commissioned and performed by organizations including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Portland State University, Portland Youth Philharmonic, and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. His Encuentro Obertura Festiva was premiered at the Hollywood Bowl under Gustavo Dudamel, and De Mi Tierra was commissioned and premiered by the Oregon Symphony in 2024.
His Portland collaborations include Orchestra Nova Northwest, which has performed his music, as well as the Oregon Symphony, Portland Youth Philharmonic, and Metropolitan Youth Symphony. He also conducts the Reed College Orchestra, Portland Youth Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, Encore Brass Ensemble, and BRAVO Community Orchestra, and has served as a cover conductor for the Oregon Symphony and interim conductor of the Portland State University Orchestra.
His music is published internationally by Editions BIM in Switzerland. Through his composing, conducting, and teaching, Castro continues to build connections between Latin American musical traditions and contemporary music.
